By focusing on electoral races within Maryland, we aim to foster community and civic engagement among our student body. By actively engaging in the political process, students can develop crucial leadership skills, gain valuable experience, and contribute to positive change within our community and beyond. This Elections Job Guide aims to cultivate well-rounded and actively engaged future leaders at the University of Maryland by providing comprehensive and accessible information to help them find a job or internship in electoral campaigns. The opportunities described in the guide will serve as a springboard for students entering a career in public policy and legislative advocacy.

UMD Narrow Lane Project

In recent years, cities across the US have witnessed a growing demand for safer and more accessible streets, prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists. However, identifying solutions to meet this demand often requires more work. This guide, brought to you by the University of Maryland Student Government Association (UMD SGA) and Terps For Bike Lanes, explores the potential of narrow street design as a practical and impactful approach to enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety, optimizing infrastructure use, and fostering a more vibrant and sustainable College Park. This guide draws upon national research led by Dr. Shima Hamidi. It utilizes data from several US cities, including College Park, to demonstrate the benefits of adopting narrower lane widths on specific road configurations. Delve into this guide to discover how narrower streets can enhance safety for all, optimize pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, minimize environmental impact, and stimulate the local economy, ultimately leading us toward a safer, more vibrant, and more sustainable College Park. We want UMD DOTS to adopt this as the framework for future road and pedestrian design where feasible within the schema of their upcoming projects.

UMD Safety Walk Report

For nearly 20 years, SGA has conducted a Safety Walk across campus, dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of our facilities. The inspection revealed various issues, such as malfunctioning lights, inaccessible ramps, insufficient stop signs, and deficiencies in crosswalks and pedestrian accessibility. In collaboration with the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD), Residence Hall Association (RHA), and Department of Transportation Services (DOTS), we formulated recommendations for both UMD and the City Council. In 2023 we covered three distinct routes: North Campus, South Campus, and Old Town. Among the recommendations presented were requests for increased central funding and the installation of additional signage to enhance safety measures.

UMD Students and FOIA

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a federal law granting the public the right to access information held by government agencies. This includes universities receiving federal funding, like the University of Maryland College Park. FOIA fosters transparency and accountability by allowing you to request and obtain copies of various university records. This guide was made by the UMD SGA to help students navigate FOIA.

Freshmen Connection Guide

In this guide, the University of Maryland- College Park’s Student Government Assignment aims to create a comprehensive guide to help Freshmen Connection students navigate the enrollment, advising, and scheduling processes. We believe that although there is a surplus of information on UMD resources online about Freshmen Connection, it can be confusing and misleading. Therefore, this guide is designed to have all of the information about Freshmen Connection in a readily accessible guide.
